Legal to kill it, illegal to keep it; The injured Hawk

An interesting piece of bureaucracy happened today... Mom and Dad were at their various appointments early this morning as I struggled to fall asleep (didn't catch a wink all night). Anywho, I was on the cusp of sleep when from down the stairs there arose such a clatter.

I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter (and that, folks, is why I need a life) as Mom and Dad were bringing in groceries I was told to go check the cat carrier in the van. Inside there was an injured red tailed hawk. We made a few calls and found out the nearest hawk specialized clinic was a good hour away, we climbed into the van and off we went to try and save the poor thing's life.

Well after nearly breaking Dad's GPS (and it malfunctioning twice), then nearly running out of gas, we finally find the place... only to be told he's a young red tailed hawk and his wing is likely broken. If it is they're going to put him to sleep. Mom asked if there was any way they could keep him, and look after him, if his wing was broken, as opposed to putting him to sleep.

Ready for the answer you already know from the title? It's totally illegal to keep a red tailed hawk without a near impossible to acquire special license *but* it's perfectly legal for them to euthanize him. That's right. It's easier, legally, for animal clinics to *kill* endangered animals than it is for them to keep them. Does that strike nobody as wrong?

I can understand putting creatures out of their misery but I think it's unfair to not give them a fighting chance first. Shadow, my cat, was chosen to be the 'poster-cat' for a humane society that doesn't euthanize, but that's a story for another day...

Right now I'm tired and I have work in the morning, so I'm gonna get a drink and catch some sleep,

Is it me or are they a protected speicies?

I'm no ornathologist though.

Aye, that's why the shelter couldn't keep him... he got put down today.

Because of bureaucracy it was easier for them to legally put him down than to keep him... because he's a protected species.

I feel as if I helped condemn him,

Ok, ok, please don't jump on me for this one...Birds of prey are some of the hardest creatures to keep in captivity. There is so much special work and care involved that it costs a ton of money. They need to be flowen everyday, but first they need to be trained to return to the master(which is usually done when they are chicks). They have to be weighed everytime they eat and fed an amount of food that coresponds to their current weight. They also have to be given vitemins, which come in the form of powder, that the amount coresponds with their weight. I know seferal people who own, and raise these birds and it is a lot of work. If the birds are fed too much or too little or given too much or too little vitamins the birds suffer and have health complications. I know that it is unfair that the bird was simply put down, but there is soo much work put into a healthy bird in order to keep it alive, that most small animal shelters don't have enough time to dedicate to one animal. I am sorry, but i just thought you should have an idea why.

Aye, and that's fair Britt *but* the shelter *wanted* to keep him but couldn't, and with his shoulder broken he would never fly again.

I feel that the Hawk should have at least been given a chance, ya know?

Everybody says it's more humane to put the creature (be it a hawk, or a pet cat, or an injured rabbit, whatever the case may be) down rather than to let it suffer... but who's to say the animal would rather be put down?

If released back into the wild the animal at least has a chance to fight for itself (in most cases) and thus a chance to live.

I know that if I were wounded, say I was in a coma, or on life support, I would rather be given the chance to fight than to be allowed to die, or euthanized.

It's illegal to euthanize humans, as Doctor Jack Kevorkian learned, yet it's legal to do for animals... I know I don't have all the facts, and I know it's not really my place... but I feel animals should at least be given a chance to fight.

Had Dad not seen that hawk it might have been killed by a dog, or a cat, but it also might have lived, because Dad saw it, and tried to rescue it, it died... and that's humane.
